<image:title>Blog - Grand Opening: the Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The inspiration</image:title>
<image:caption>The name honors the elusive Pink Headed Duck, a rare species native to the wetlands of eastern India and Myanmar and feared extinct since the 1950s. More recently, however, a series of credible yet unconfirmed sightings by fishermen in northern Myanmar has led some experts and hopeful bird watchers to believe it still might roam the impenetrable marshes and swamps of Kachin State.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A venture headed by Face of Indawgyi, this social impact cafe where 25% of profits go to a community-led fund is the predecessor to the future social impact hotel that will occupy the same piece of lush green land. The first project the fund will support is a cobblestone walking path down the neighborhood hillside so families can more easily and safely access their daily activities on the lake.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grand Opening: the Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The menu</image:title>
<image:caption>All menu items highlight local seasonal ingredients and the Shan-ni people, a subgroup of the Shan, from Myanmar’s largest lake. This is why Sawbwa Coffee, in addition to being an award-winning specialty coffee, is the cafe’s coffee of choice. Shan-ni Sawbwas, or princes, used to rule over Indawgyi and much of the lowlands of northern Myanmar as far back as a thousand years ago. The cafe staff also works with local farmers to produce the first Indawgyi coffee and qishr (coffee husk) tea blends, and both are available to try in-house for a limited time before the 2020 harvest begins. You can also relish in the moment with a selection of freshly baked butter-crust pies and artisan breads topped with homemade jam using seasonal fruit, many times coming directly from fruit trees on the property.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grand Opening: the Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The design</image:title>
<image:caption>The renovated open-air cafe occupies the first floor of an original teak house and upcycles a variety of local wood materials into surprising and tasteful furnishings. Working with a skillful team of Shan-ni carpenters, they found two old slabs of teak left as waste by lumber collectors in the nearby forest and reused as coffee bars. They remodeled three disused ox-cart wheels into circular tables and a neighbor’s derelict 20-year-old teak boat into a couch and high table for the cafe. Additionally, all fabrics for seating pillows have been sourced from Indawgyi’s traditional textile shop in Mainaung Village. From the menu to the cafe design, everything is meant to reflect both the beauty and mythology that lives on around the Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grand Opening: the Pink Headed Duck Cafe - Getting here</image:title>
<image:caption>Visiting Indawgyi and the cafe is now easier than ever with a number of Kachin-bound flights, busses, and trains that can fit any budget. The cafe staff is always available via phone or our website and can help answer any questions for organizing your trip. Starting this August, escape the city for an elusive experience at the Pink Headed Duck Cafe.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The inspiration</image:title>
<image:caption>The name honors the elusive Pink Headed Duck, a rare species native to the wetlands of eastern India and Myanmar and feared extinct since the 1950s. More recently, however, a series of credible yet unconfirmed sightings by fishermen in northern Myanmar has led some experts and hopeful bird watchers to believe it still might roam the impenetrable marshes and swamps of Kachin State.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The menu</image:title>
<image:caption>All menu items highlight local seasonal ingredients and produce from Kachin State, Myanmar’s northernmost province and home of the first Pink Headed Duck Cafe. You can relish in the moment with a selection of freshly baked butter-crust pies paired with seasonal fruit, delectable cinnamon rolls, and other American-style sweets that were childhood favorites of the cafe’s founder. Our team of baristas proudly serves Myanmar specialty coffee from partner roasters and farming communities, many of which we now export and connect with coffee lovers in the United States and Canada. To give you the best flavor from every bean, we exclusively serve handmade coffees using AeroPress coffee makers — a manual coffee maker designed to brew a smoother, less bitter cup of coffee in record time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Pink Headed Duck Cafe - The design</image:title>
<image:caption>The renovated cafe occupies the first floor of a previously vacant space and upcycles a variety of leftover wood materials into tasteful furnishings. Working with an antiques carpenter in Yankin Township, we refurbished all original teak chairs, bookshelves, dividers, and painted doors found in this space and reused them to create a place where customers want to spend a morning, afternoon or more. Additionally, all fabrics for seating pillows have been sourced from Kachin and Shan States. From the menu to the cafe design, everything is meant to reflect both the beauty and mythology that lives on throughout northern Myanmar.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Contact Us - Stephen Traina-Dorge</image:title>
<image:caption>Stephen Traina-Dorge is the project founder and has been living and working in Myanmar for several years. He first came to Indawgyi in 2015 as part of his Face of Myanmar project which used the medium of Thanaka, face paste common in Myanmar, as a lens to look inside the nation's complex social history and its contemporary issues. He has also co-directed two documentary films, one for the US Embassy and the other for USAID, which helped him look even deeper into the country. Among all his travels across Asia, one place was truly special and that was Indawgyi. Its beauty struck him immediately, but so too did the contradiction of a wildlife sanctuary having trash scattered all over it. The solution is simple: education and infrastructure. Building these things will take time, but the results will hopefully be a model for other parts of Myanmar.</image:caption>

Fluent in both Burmese and English, Shar Lae Phyu is from Mandalay and appreciates the many treasures of her home city, but also is an avid adventurer. If she is not at school or helping Face of Indawgyi, she is journeying to distant corners of the country to find out as much as possible about the people, communities and cultures in Myanmar and around the world.</image:caption>
